Overall economic outlook
The global economic outlook continues to be dominated by opposing forces. On the one hand, the economy is buoyed by the technology-driven investment cycle, while on the other, energy-importing countries in particular are feeling the ripple effects of the Middle East conflict. In the October 2026 World Economic Outlook, the IMF projects global growth at 3.1 % for the current year and 3.4 % for 2027, marking a slight upgrade to its 2026 outlook. The IMF is significantly more optimistic about the outlook for Germany, with growth now projected to reach 1.3 %, up from 0.7 %, driven by stronger public investment and rising exports. Meanwhile, the IMF expects eurozone growth of 1.1 % for the current year.
The risks for the outlook remain heightened. A renewed escalation in the Middle East could push up energy prices even higher and disrupt global supply chains. Further risks are posed by increasing global trade fragmentation, limited fiscal flexibility due to high national debt and rising financing costs, and a potential correction in the AI sector to reset unrealistic expectations which could put strain on both the finance markets and the technology-driven investment cycle. Irrespective of this, the telecommunications industry has so far proven to be resilient in the face of economic fluctuations. Nevertheless, intense competition continues to shape the market environment in key markets, mainly Europe and the United States.
